Here is my @Homebuilt Arcade Machine which I call
"UNICADE -- The Retro Arcade Machine Emulator."

The inspiration for this project came from Arcade@Home and my friend Kevin Umbach whom also built his own Defender style cabinet after helping "prototype" mine. He'd been thinking about building one a few years ago before it got trendy to do so, but still he thought I should go first. Yup, once he saw my beast finally assembled he ran out to Home Depot the very next day too! 8^) Our wives thought we were both crazy but I got pics of mine playing with the unfinished product. This was just in case she were to whine about the final cost of the project!

Besides MAME Kevin ALSO got me hooked on the William's Arcade Classic CD-ROM which I recently acquired for $19.95 at FutureShop (he paid much more when it first came out!). Though I popped a few quarters into these Willams quarter-eating machines in the 80's I knew THEN when to cut my losses! Now it doesn't cost me a thing to get my arse kicked at Defender! Robotron is now my NEWLY rediscovered favorite game next to Pac Man and Galaga of course! 8^)

My plans are modified from John Biehler's "Plastic Cactus" cabinet design. During the course of construction I e-mailed John and got some insight on how he built his. I thank you John for sharing your cabinet design! This is indeed a childhood dream come true!

Like John I had to make some design changes on the fly during construction. For the cabinet style I opted to mimic the Joust cabinet with the control panel overhanging -- which was not featured in John's plans.

I will next be building a MAME Cocktail cabinet! In fact Kevin just acquired two FREE real arcade cocktail cabinets and kindly gave me one! Yup, it's already gutted and awaiting assembly! However, we may decide to scratch build one yet and save the cabinets for a real machine one day. Stay tuned for more pics on this project coming soon!

What's New?

Thursday, April 22, 2004 newnew.gif (12646 bytes)

I have just resurrected my Unicade Project Pages. Will be updating soon as there have been a ton of updates to the hardware.

Thursday, August 18th, 2000

Tomorrow I will be acquiring a Pentium-166 Motherboard with 32 MB of RAM to upgrade the Unicade machine. I see that Kevin also added a Spinner control to his machine -- so now I will too. Stay tuned for updates to the Unicade pages soon.

Thursday, May 16th, 2000

Added a few new links to the site. Some great things happening on the net in EMU and MAME machines! Okay, back to my James Bond movie now! 8^) Yup, the latest was released today!

Thursday, March 16th, 2000

Added some new photos to the Control Panel section to clarify how I attached the joystick and arcade controls to the keyboard. I really didn't think that needed clarifying, but I guess these photos will clear up that mystery for some.

Also updated the Mailbag which prompted the update above. A new page was added for the Cocktail Cabinet version of Unicade. This was an old Sky Soldiers game that my buddy Kevin Umbach gave me! He managed to come into two of the somehow! Bless his heart!

Right now it sits in my basement full of Model Rockets and other assorted junk. Soon I will be looking to acquire a machine for it then the fun begins. How to mount a monitor in this sucker!

Just added my GBMULE page and added some links to Gameboy Programming page! Yup, I'm gonna try and port MULE over to the Gameboy!

Monday, November 29th, 1999

Been busy surfing the "Gameboy Development WebRing" and plucking tools and code examples. Amazing stuff out there! Anyways, stopped by a kewl Mac Emulator site and just had to add button on my pahe along with one to ICG. Check out this site, they have Arcade Emuz as well. But, boy would I sure love to the see that VAX emulator running on a Mac! 8^)

Sunday, November 28th, 1999

You'll notice the new Gameboy section which I put here because it related to gaming. Yup, looking to learn how to write some games for this puppy! Stay tuned.

Tuesday, November 16th, 1999

You've got mail! Yup, since the page has been updated the e-mails have been coming in pretty steady! Check out the update in my Mailbag to some of your questions, and also as promised the LINKS section has been updated -- with lot's more yet to come!

Friday, November 12th, 1999

Here you go, the new UNICADE pages are back on-line. Further updates will be posted once I get underway on some cabinet upgrades and begin work on my cockail version.

Sunday, November 7th, 1999

Okay, I'm just starting to put the UNICADE pages back together here. This section sorely needed an update. I was quite amazed to see that this part of my website gets visited the most often! So -- look forward to some new pictures and more detailed information on the UNICADE cabinet.

May your pockets always be full of quarters! Not!
